West Ham United closest rivals in the Premier League are now also the side’s closest rival in the survival fight this season. Tottenham Hotspur have had a woeful season and now sit just one point above Nuno Espirito Santo’s Hammers.

Spurs made their second managerial change of the season this week, parting ways with Igor Tudor. Former Juventus boss Tudor had been brought in to ease Tottenham’s relegation woes, but instead could not get the team going, and leaves with them staring the drop zone in the face.

West Ham‘s rivals are now targeting former Brighton & Hove Albion boss, Roberto De Zerbi. The Italian is said to be interested in the job, who left Marseille earlier this season. Despite this, De Zerbi had previously stated he did not want to take over until after the conclusion of the campaign, a stance that has now changed.

Talks are ongoing, but it is likely De Zerbi will be in place at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium sooner rather than later.

Former West Ham midfielder’s assessment of Tottenham’s new move

Former West Ham favourite, Kevin Nolan is not a fan of Spurs next choice of manager. The former midfielder described the move as “desperate”, with Tottenham now direct competition to the Hammers in the survival fight.

Speaking on talkSPORT Nolan went on, describing how De Zerbi’s mind change is not a good thing.

“What worries me about this is he’s already said no, and he doesn’t want to do it,” he said.

“By throwing more money at him, why should that change his mind?

“If he thought that he had an opportunity to go in, keep them up, and build on that, it would have been done.

“And I think it would have been done last time as well because he was out of a job when Igor Tudor got the job. So yeah, it feels a bit strange.”

Neither West Ham or Tottenham return to Premier League action this weekend, with the Hammers looking to make an FA Cup semi-final as they host Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs will be looking to use the time to confirm their appointment, whilst Nuno’s Irons want to build some momentum before returning to the relegation battle.
