West Ham United may be in their own fight to stay in the Premier League right now but the club have a number of players out on-loan right now. One of those players is midfielder Edson Alvarez, who is playing in Türkiye for Fenerbahce.

The 28-year-old was not favoured by former Hammers boss Graham Potter, and was sent out to find another club in August last year. Unfortunately, Alvarez has been out since February with an ankle issue, something he has since had surgery on.

There were some concern that the Mexican international would miss the remainder of the season, and even the World Cup this summer, with his country being one of the host nations. According to Turkish media, those worries have been put to bed and Alvarez is expected to return this season.

West Ham loanee’s mixed injury update

Whilst for Alvarez it is good news that he will return this year, there was also some mixed information for the West Ham loanee.

The 28-year-old will play again for Fenerbahce this season, giving him plenty of time to recover match fitness ahead of the World Cup. Despite this, caution has been advised with the ankle issue being more complex than most.

There is said to be more risk with this injury than any other Alvarez has suffered before and whilst he is eager to recover his form for this summer, his minutes will need to be managed. Whether or not Fenerbahce like that.

Alvarez could join the Turkish club permanently this summer with a West Ham return unlikely. Former club Ajax are interested with the midfielder set to be on the chopping block at the Hammers as an expensive asset.
