West Ham United have their own battle’s to contend with, but one thing that might be set in stone is the permanent exit of Edson Alvarez. The midfielder is currently on-loan at Turkish side Fenerbahce, and whilst he has played well there, has undergone ankle surgery, and will now likely miss the remainder of the season.
Fenerbahce have the option to purchase the Mexican midfielder in summer for £19.5m, but with the player’s injury, whether or not the club take up that option, it up in the air. According to reports, with Alvarez’s injury concerns, the club believe the price to be too steep.
With West Ham likely to hold out on their price, the Hammers could look elsewhere to move Alvarez on. According to Soccer News, Dutch giants, Ajax, the midfielder’s former club, could well be the correct suitors for the Mexican national team captain.
The Champions League side had shown interest in taking the 28-year-old back, and would be interested in taking him off West Ham’s hands. Depending on where the Irons finish this season, the door could be reopened for Alvarez, but if not, the midfielder will have his suitors.
Edson Alvarez’s indifferent West Ham career
Alvarez joined West Ham in the summer of 2023, in a deal for around £35m. In two full season’s for the Hammers, the 28-year-old struggled to adapt for the most part, but also put in some decent performances along the way.

The defensive midfield player managed to find the net twice in his first season in London, but as managerial changes the season after, Alvarez struggled, dropping down the pecking order. Whilst a decision was made on the Mexican prior to the season, Nuno Espirito Santo could have a place for him next season.
Should the Irons stay in the Premier League, Nuno’s current formation could work for Alvarez, with two holding midfielders in play. Unfortunately for the 28-year-old, with the wages he is on, that door will only open if West Ham can confirm their safety.
West Ham’s midfield situation
Under Nuno this season, West Ham are playing with two holding midfielders, and a central attacking midfielder. Tomas Soucek has played in the attacking role over the last few games, using his physicality and strength to help the striker in front of him.
Mateus Fernandes has player in one of the deeper roles. This has allowed the 21-year-old to control play, and really connect defence with attack when on the ball.
Alongside Fernandes has either been local boy, Freddie Potts, or Frenchman Soungoutou Magassa. Both players have put in good performances in the second-half of the season, and this would be the spot Alvarez would have to fight for.
