Kevin Phillips tips West Ham to deliver ‘very clever’ Anwar El Ghazi transfer

West Ham have been backed to pull off the ‘very clever’ signing of Aston Villa forward Anwar El Ghazi.

This comes after the Hammers were linked with a move for the 26-year-old recently.

Somewhat of a lesser-seen player since the arrival of Steven Gerrard in the Midlands, El Ghazi could be seeking a new challenge sooner rather than later.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips tipped the Irons to get the best out of the Dutchman.

Yes, I think that would be a very clever signing. Is he really in Steven Gerrard plans? I don’t think so. He has come off the bench but he’s not been given a start. It suggests to me that he’s not in the plans. El Ghazi has Premier League experience and on his day he can be a real handful. He can run at people and chips in with goals. I think he’d turn out to be a shrewd signing for a number of clubs going into the second half of the season.

So far this season the twice-capped Holland ace has scored three times and provided three assists in 11 appearances across all competitions.

Valued at £9million and under contract at Villa Park until 2023 (Transfermarkt), the former Ajax starlet would represent an attainable target.

Having proven his worth on the back of a 10-goal league campaign in 2020/21, the Dutchman has struggled to kick on again this term.

Predominantly operating from wide areas, David Moyes would certainly benefit from adding a player with such an array of forward-thinking attributes to the London Stadium squad.

matchday.
