Former Wales international Dean Saunders has urged the West Ham hierarchy to ‘take another step forward’ under David Moyes.
The Hammers are currently suffering a slight dip in form having been dumped out of the Carabao Cup by rivals Tottenham.
Without either first-choice centre-back or Michail Antonio in attack, the Irons’ squad is being tested to its limit as the January window approaches.
Speaking on the TalkSPORT Sports Bar, Saunders called for the board to back Moyes in the market.
[Manuel] Pellegrini was manager for a bit and they gave him a load of money and that didn’t work. Under David Moyes, they are getting back, he’s got a team together. If I was the owner I would be saying, ‘What do you need David?’ West Ham are on the brink of the next step, I think this is the best team they have had for years. They’ve got really good players. And the thing is, if you don’t show the players now that they are going to take another step forward, they will leave. If your best players can see that you are trying to win something and you’re going to go forward, the likes of Declan Rice will start saying he is happy there.
So far during a second spell at the London Stadium, Moyes has spent £98.8million plus the loan arrival of Alex Kral on various permanent and temporary incomings.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
Mid-season arrivals are a must if the Hammers are going to stand any chance of reaching the heights predicted early on in the campaign.
With both Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma likely to miss much of the start of 2022, a central defender has to be at the top of the priority list for Moyes.
Meanwhile, having failed to replace Sebastien Haller for almost a year, a suitable backup for Antonio must surely arrive.
Given the progression under the Scot up until now as well as the success in the recruitment department, there should be no hesitation in allowing more expenditure in the January market.
