Former West Ham winger Trevor Sinclair has been backpedalling on social media following initial doubts over Ben Johnson’s inclusion against Aston Villa.
The 21-year-old retained his place in David Moyes’ starting lineup despite the return of Vladimir Coufal to the matchday squad.
Ahead of the clash at Villa Park, Sinclair suggested the academy graduate was facing a big test in Jamaican winger Leon Bailey.
Following a bright start from the Hammers, Johnson put his own footprint on the contest when a left-footed strike arrowed into the bottom corner to break the deadlock.
Subsequently the young full-back deal with Bailey with aplomb all afternoon and earned yet more praise from the former Iron of 197 appearances.
Overall, Johnson completed two clearances, three interceptions, eight tackles and blocked one shot in an outstanding 8.10 Sofascore rated display.

Based on this outing Coufal could struggle to regain his spot in Moyes’ side for some time.
Despite the Czech ace barely putting a foot wrong since arriving at the London Stadium, Johnson has been superb in his absence recently.
Competition for places is always welcomed, especially when fighting on numerous fronts – it’s now up to Coufal, Johnson and indeed Ryan Fredericks to battle for supremity.
