Former England and West Ham central defender Rio Ferdinand has been speaking about a possible Declan Rice to Manchester United transfer once again.

Having recently joked that the Old Trafford club should ‘welcome’ the 22-year-old to Manchester on social media, Ferdinand has delved a little deeper into the possibility of the potential transfer.

Believed to be long-time admirers of Rice, along with Chelsea, the former Red Devils ace has admitted that a defensive-midfielder may not be the priority.

The 42-year-old discussed the Hammers star on his FIVE YouTube channel this week.

With a position like Declan’s, it’s more: do Man United feel he’s an absolute need right now? Are there other areas in the team where they have a bigger desire to recruit for? I think centre-back, 100%, and I think right-wing, 100%. West Ham fans are going mad on social media, by the way, they’re hammering me like, ‘Why are you saying Man United should buy him?’

Despite playing down the potential move this summer, Ferdinand went on to confirm whoever landed Rice would be singing a long-term investment.

I think whoever buys Declan Rice buys someone who’s going to be there and committed for 10 years, giving you top-quality service, and someone who will be a driver of the right culture at your football club. That’s what you’re buying. And obviously, a player who’s still got levels to grow in his game, and who’s hungry.

Unfortunately, interest in a player of the ability of Rice is inevitable.

Having played an integral role as David Moyes’ side qualified for the Europa League, the 18-cap England man is rightfully hot property.

The Irons meanwhile will be confident of keeping their £58.8million valued asset at least beyond this summer, helped in no small part due to European football next term.
