Kevin Campbell can’t believe Declan Rice ‘too slow’ claims

Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell has been left stunned by a report from Claret & Hugh claiming Manchester United will turn away from Declan Rice because of his pace.

The report claimed the club’s interest in Rice has cooled given his £100million price tag and being deemed ‘too slow’ to occupy the role required.

This season the 22-year-old has made 32 appearances across all competitions – leading David Moyes’ side as captain for the most part.

An abundance of fine displays has lead to interest from Chelsea and the Old Trafford club, however, Campbell told Football Insider he can’t comprehend why the latter would cite a lack of pace.

A bit too slow? Slow? No, no, no, no way. I do not believe that for one second. Declan Rice is a fine player and an athletic player. He is a phenomenal holding midfielder who can play at centre-half as well, let’s not forget that he has that versatility to his game. He has been a revelation in the midfield. I really think he has been. He has been one of the mainstays of a West Ham team that could qualify for the Champions League this season. I would not worry about that.

West Ham‘s top-four bid took another knock this weekend when the Irons lost 1-0 to Everton at the London Stadium with Rice still sidelined due to a knee injury.

Although Moyes and co would be happy for all to maintain the belief the 15-cap England man was indeed ‘too slow’ to leave east London – it simply isn’t the case.

At no point this season has Rice looked short on pace, despite playing in a demanding midfield anchor role alongside Tomas Soucek.

Instead, the £54million valued ace has been a revelation once again this term and continues to flourish when exposed to elite level competition.

matchday.
