On this day (April 28) 2007, West Ham continued on their path to the great escape with a resounding 3-0 victory over Wigan at the JJB Stadium.

Following a single goal success a week earlier at Upton Park against Everton, the Hammers remained three points adrift of safety and in need of a miracle.

Portuguese attacker Luis Boa Morte opened the scoring for Alan Curbishley’s side on the half-hour mark in a sun-drenched Lancashire.

With nerves still circulating and a place in the top flight very much on the line, the Irons dominated the second half before Yossi Benayoun doubled the lead

West Ham icon Marlon Harewood put the game beyond doubt with a third goal in the 82nd minute and Curbishley’s men went on to live another day at least.

All three points took the Hammers level with Wigan on 35 as the final two matchdays approached.

Remarkably, victories over Bolton Wanderers and Manchester United on the final day meant the east Londoners survived with ease – finishing in 15th place having looked doomed to the drop some three weeks earlier.

Back in the present day, a David Moyes managed West Ham side have put last seasons narrow avoidance of relegation behind them and are instead focussing on a possible UEFA Champions League place.
