OTD: West Ham throw away two goal lead against Newcastle United

On this day (April 26) 2008, West Ham threw away a two-goal lead at Upton Park to draw 2-2 with Newcastle United.

The Hammers marched into an early lead when evergreen club legend Mark Noble opened the scoring before iconic striker Dean Ashton doubled the advantage inside the first 25 minutes.

On what was a landmark day for the east Londoners as they played their 500th Premier League fixture, in the moments before half time things began to unravel.

First, former Inter Milan star Obafemi Martins got one back for the Magpies before a George McCartney own goal levelled matters before the break.

Amazingly, the two sides managed by Alan Curbishley and Kevin Keegan respectively contrived to add no further goals in the second half after an action-packed opening 45 minutes.

Memorable Irons from this fixture include Freddie Ljungberg, Luis Boa Morte and John Pantsil.

West Ham finished the Premier League campaign in 10th position, comfortably clear of relegation and someway short of European qualification.

Back in the present day, David Moyes’ side suffered a blow to their chances of participating amongst Europe’s elite over the weekend and will be looking to return to winning ways against Burnley next Monday night.
