West Ham fans stick up for Declan Rice after FA Cup loss

Declan Rice exemplified his leadership qualities in his post-match verdict following West Ham’s 1-0 extra-time defeat against Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

A fast breakaway from the Red Devils culminating in a half-volley from Scott McTominay was enough to seal the Hammers’ exit from the competition, but it was a valiant showing from the Irons.

The Hammers lost both Angelo Ogbonna and his replacement Issa Diop to injury during the game, with the latter becoming the first concussion substitution in English football.

Matters turned from bad to worse when Andriy Yarmolenko also suffered a grizzly and untimely injury, with Moyes confirming the Ukrainian had ‘opened up his knee ligaments’.

There was something of a scramble from the Hammers to clear their lines before the unfortunate goal sunk their cup dreams, with Rice garnering particular praise for his response to the defeat. He also took personal responsibility in a statement posted after the game on Twitter.

Rice’s response was characteristic of a man unafraid to shy away from individual responsibility, earning plaudits from many West Ham fans…
