Declan Rice Receives Plaudits Despite Disappointing England Result

Hammers midfielder Declan Rice came in for praise from West Ham United supporters last night following England’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark at Wembley.

The 21-year-old spoke to the media after the match and has been lauded for the way he spoke about the Harry Maguire situation after the Manchester United centre-back was dismissed early in the match leaving the hosts one man down.

Rice, earning his 11th cap on the night, said: “Since he (Maguire) came in 10 days ago he’s been fantastic. He’s been amazing with me and he’s someone that I love to play behind me because he’s good on the ball. He plays little passes into you and he’s always talking.”

The defensive midfielder, who put in an impressive performance following Maguire’s dismissal, went on to say: “Anyone can get a red card – that’s unfortunate. Maguire is a great player and he’s been a fantastic servant for England so far so long may that continue for him.”

It was the articulate response following a disheartening loss that caught the attention of Irons fans, who reacted in turn.

READ WEST HAM VERDICT

Rice has certainly done himself no harm in terms of performance or credibility during the Denmark defeat.

The 21-year-old has equipped himself extremely well for both club and country since opting to represent England over the Republic of Ireland and with interviews such as this, looks to possess leadership qualities that could well be seen at the London Stadium when Mark Noble moves on.
