Former West Ham manager Sam Allardyce believes the club should go all out to sign Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa.
The Spain international has been linked with a return to the Premier League this week, just 18 months after he left Chelsea to return to the Spanish capital, with other Premier League rivals such as Everton linked with an offer.
The Hammers meanwhile are desperate to bring in a forward this summer, having lost Andy Carroll following the expiration of his contract, while Lucas Perez and Marko Arnautovic have been sold.
While Costa hasn’t had the most successful of spells back with Atletico, having struggled to score consistently while he recently received an eight-match ban for abusing a referee, the 30-year old is still remember for his destructive spell as Chelsea’s main forward, scoring 52 total league goals as he led his side to two Premier League titles.
Speaking on talkSPORT’s breakfast show, Allardyce made clear his stance that West Ham should do everything they can to bring the forward to the London Stadium. Allardyce said:
The salary is what you have to pay for a goalscorer and they’ll reap the rewards if he gets West Ham in the top half of the table.
Pushing on that little bit farther, he could actually get them into Europe with his goals.
He’s definitely the sort of player who would be a hit with the West Ham fans.
The former England international was backed in his claim by former Hammers academy graduate Glen Johnson, who also believes that the club should go all out to bring the controversial figure back to England. Johnson said:
He’s still got plenty left in the tank and the club have shown over the years that if they want someone they’ll go and get them. They can pay Diego the wages he would no doubt demand.
I reckon he would thrive being a big fish in a smaller pond as well. I think it would be a perfect fit. I’d love to see him back in the Premier League and would love to see him at West Ham.
If Arnie is gone, I would have swapped the pair of them over anyway. I’d rather Diego in my team than Arnie all day long
He’s one of those players who you’d love to have him on your side, but he’s nightmare to play against.
Costa is just the latest player linked with a switch and plenty more are sure to be considered as the Hammers look to find replacements before the transfer window closes.
Forwards West Ham could replace Marko Arnautovic with
Sebastien Haller is a name that has been bandied around for a while in relation to a Premier League switch. The 25-year old German would reportedly cost around £36million, and his transfer would surely be a gamble.
However, given his impressive performance level in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt, it could be a gamble worth taking for the Hammers.
The Argentine front-man is not returning to Stamford Bridge this summer, and with his future uncertain with Juventus, he looks set to move on before the window closes.
While it seems like a deal unlikely to be pulled off, the former Real Madrid man would be a steal for the club if they could pull it off.
The Italy international has reportedly been offered to West Ham, and after leaving Marseille he would arrive on a free.
While the striker has always been erratic and unpredictable, he has shown in the past what he can do when he wishes to do so, scoring 33 goals in 61 league games for Nice in recent years.
The Bournemouth striker would be the perfect signing for Manuel Pellegrini, if the club are willing to meet the Cherries’ asking price.
A key player for the South Coast club, Bournemouth value the England international at £60million which could prove to pricey for the Hammers. However, he would certainly add much needed quality to the club’s front-line.
