Much has been made about West Ham’s goalkeeping situation but there has always been one man on the outside looking in.
Raphael Spiegel joined the Hammers in July 2012 in a £340,000 deal from Swiss side Grasshoppers to develop in the U21 side but in the five years since his arrival, he’s yet to make a single first-team appearance for the club.
The 24-year-old has had loan spells with Carlisle, Crawley and Barnet but has never progressed to be anything more than the club’s third-choice ‘keeper.
A regular for the U23 side, Spiegel signed a new two-year contract running until June 2018 last season but it appears the club are ready to part ways with the former Switzerland U21 international.
According to Sudpresse (h/t VoetballKrant), Spiegel is expected to travel to Belgium next Monday to undergo a medical with Pro League outfit Royal Excel Mouscron.
West Ham released academy goalkeeper Sam Howes earlier this summer but have great faith that England U19 international Nathan Trott can develop further at the club in the coming years.
Adrian and Darren Randolph are the club’s current first-team options while there are continuous links with a loan move for out-of-favour Manchester City and England stopper Joe Hart.
