When West Ham broke their transfer record last summer with the £20.5m arrival of Andre Ayew from Swansea, fans were rightfully expecting big things from the attacker who netted 12 goals in his one and only season in English football.
Things got off to the worst possible start for Ayew when he suffered a thigh tear in his debut away at Chelsea in the first game of the season, causing him to miss two months of action.
Ayew struggled to find his feet during the late autumn and winter months following his return but eventually netted his first goal for the club in an away win at former club Swansea before jetting off to the African Cup of Nations.
After returning, Ayew hit the ground running, netting five goals and providing three assists in the final 13 games of the season, offering hope for fans as to what he can offer when he’s fully fit.
Less than 12 months into his three-year contract, Ayew is already being linked with a move away from the London Stadium as the Mirror claim that Marseille are looking to re-sign the Ghanaian.
The 27-year-old came through the ranks at Marseille and scored 60 goals for the Ligue 1 side in 209 appearances before leaving on a free transfer to join Swansea in 2015.
Ghanasoccernet are reporting that Marseille, who qualified for next season’s Europa League on the final day of the Ligue 1 season, are willing to offer £30m to bring Ayew back to the club as they look to rebuild themselves as a powerhouse side in French football.
Marseille successfully managed to re-sign Dimitri Payet from West Ham back in January 18 months after he left the club to join the Hammers and are equally confident of striking a deal for Ayew.
There’s a section of West Ham fans that still doubt whether Ayew was a wise signing by the club but he offered enough in the final months of the season to suggest he could be a big player for us in the years to come.
That being said, a £30m offer may be too good to turn down for the Hammers in a summer where they’re looking to splash the cash on a proven centre-forward.
