Defensively speaking, West Ham have committed a number of individual errors this season which have led to goals being conceded.
The acquisition of a strong, no-nonsense defender would go a long way to righting the wrongs of this season and according to the London Evening Standard, West Ham are keen on signing Middlesbrough centre-back, Ben Gibson.
A centre-back by trade but can also operate at left-back, Gibson has been a standout performer for Middlesbrough this season who boast an impressive defensive record despite sitting at the wrong end of the table.
Son of ‘Boro owner and Chairman, Steve Gibson, the 24-year-old would not come cheap with the report stating that the north east club value their club captain at £30m.

Having signed a new deal back in August, Gibson is considered one of the most valuable assets the club has but if they are relegated back to the Championship then it would be very hard to convince him to stay put, considering interest from both West Ham and Arsenal.
Slaven Bilic wants to bring in vocal leaders into the squad, as we saw with the signing of Southampton skipper Jose Fonte in January, and Gibson would be another strong presence in the dressing room.
