It’s a familiar story for West Ham, one that is told pretty much every year on loop. A story about how Andy Carroll is struggling with another injury and the Hammers are once again left short in attack.
This year is no different as the 28-year-old, having worked hard to recover from a knee injury suffered in August which kept him out for three months, is once again trying to fend off his latest ‘knock’, this time a groin strain.
While Slaven Bilic keeps stating that it’s nothing serious, it’ll have been over a month since Carroll last played by the time the Chelsea game next Monday comes around which, in my book, is a serious layoff.
Anyway, it’s been a long time coming for West Ham to bring in some genuine competition and quality in attack alongside Carroll and the Telegraph insist that the Hammers could make a summer bid for Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke.
It’s claimed that the Belgian striker is growing increasingly disgruntled at Selhurst Park with the club battling relegation and he could seek out a summer exit, especially if the Eagles are sent packing to the Championship.
West Ham were heavily linked with a bid for Benteke while he was at Liverpool prior to his £30m move to Palace last summer, with David Sullivan lamenting the Belgian’s transfer fee and wage demands on several occasions since.
Clearly, West Ham need another striker, we can’t go through another season with pretty much just Andy Carroll who isn’t available as often as we like, and perhaps the club are ready to bite the bullet and bring in Benteke.
