Aston Villa rival West Ham for Scott Hogan

It seems the weeks spent dithered over whether to pay up and sign Scott Hogan from Brentford could come back and haunt West Ham.

According to Jason Burt of the Telegraph, Aston Villa have now entered the race for the 24-year-old striker who has been in-demand much of the January transfer window.

The Hammers have had three bids turned down for Hogan this month already, the latest worth a reported £12.5m but Brentford are sticking to their guns and are adamant that they will not consider selling Hogan unless a bid of £15m comes in before tomorrow’s deadline.

Despite scoring 14 goals in the Championship already this season, Slaven Bilic is undecided on whether to meet the asking price for Hogan, a player who has risen through the football pyramid, has never played in the Premier League and has a history of serious knee injuries.

In August 2014, Hogan suffered an ACL tear in his left knee which kept him on the sidelines for over 560 days, missing 83 consecutive games for Brentford before his return in March 2016, and he came back with a bang, scoring 20 Championship goals in the 2016 calendar year, the most of any player.

Hogan seems like a true boom or bust style signing, but West Ham cannot press forward with their injury-prone triumvirate of Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew in attack.
