It’s common knowledge that West Ham are after a striker this month and their search has led them down a familiar path.
Targeting a move for Jermain Defoe, the Hammers are hopeful of bringing their former striker back to East London during the transfer window.
However, Sunderland will prove to be stubborn negotiators for their invaluable striker. The Mirror are reporting that West Ham have had a bid turned down for the 34-year-old striker, believed to be worth in the region of £5m.
The approach was immediately turned down by the Black Cats who are battling against relegation with Defoe’s 11 goals already this season their sole beacon of hope in what looks like a lost cause.
West Ham believe Defoe is interested in a move back to London and are willing to go in with another offer, but Sam Allardyce and Crystal Palace are also keeping tabs on the situation.
With Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri expected to have their respective season-long loan deals terminated this month, Slaven Bilic is eager to bring in at least one striker this month and given Defoe’s pedigree at this level he would prove to be a savvy acquisition.
