West Ham will inevitably need to offload several players in January if they wish to add the right players to their squad in a bid to fend off relegation and build towards a strong top half finish.
One of the players West Ham are most keen on is Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe. After seeing a £5m bid turned down by the Black Cats, the Guardian suggest that the Hammers will go in again with an offer of £7m.
However, to fund that move and make room in the squad, the Guardian state that West Ham will sell young striker Ashley Fletcher in order to do so, and Leeds are willing to make a £1.5m bid for the striker.
The Hammers signed Fletcher on a four-year contract after leaving Manchester United at the expiry of his deal at Old Trafford, having turned down an offer to stay in the North West along with deals from Leeds and Wolves.
To date, Fletcher has made 14 appearances for the Hammers, primarily off the bench, scoring one goal but in all honesty, no one expected the 20-year-old to have this big of a role in the first-team squad so soon.
Whether selling Fletcher is a wise move or not, West Ham do need to free up space in the squad to bring in some quality players and Fletcher might have to be the guy that makes way.
