Marseille trying to persuade Dimitri Payet to return

Marseille are really trying hard to bring Dimitri Payet back to the club in the January transfer window.

It was reported recently by L’Equipe that the Ligue 1 club were prepared to spend between €30-40m in order to bring the attacking midfielder back to the Stade Velodrome after American businessman Frank McCourt bought the club and is ready to invest big.

The 29-year-old left Marseille for West Ham in the summer of 2015 for a reported €15m and was one of the standout players in the Premier League during the 2015/16 season and at Euro 2016.

In 2016, no player made more assists than Dimitri Payet in the Premier League (15) and no player created more chances than the Frenchman (144) proving that he is amongst the elite playmakers in Europe.

Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG have all been linked with Payet, but in a recent interview with French TV station SFR Sport (h/t the Express), Payet refused to rule out a return to his former employers.

“I am not closing the door to anything. Marseille have a new project which seems interesting.

“Aside from that, we are obviously waiting to see the first few things that the new owners do, but Marseille knows how attached I am to the club.

“When I talk about it, I say the best possible things, because that is what I think, so why not.”

According to France Football, Marseille have been in talks with Payet’s entourage about a possible return to the Ligue 1 club in January – led and organised by manager Rudi Garcia.

Payet has a strong relationship with Garcia after working with him during their time together at Lille and this could be the catalyst behind any possible transfer.

West Ham are adamant that they will not sell Payet for any price and especially not in January meaning any move would need to be forced by the player himself.

Garcia is hoping to persuade Payet to return because it’s in the best interests of his family. He loves Marseille, the region, the way of life and so does his family.

France Football believe Payet is almost entirely convinced on a return to Marseille but West Ham will be reluctant to let him leave.
