Dimitri Payet opens the door for a return to Marseille

Dimitri Payet has been continually linked with a move away from West Ham following his wonderful debut season with the club last term.

He carried that form into Euro 2016 where his play helped guide France to the final where they lost in extra time to Portugal, but it certainly didn’t damage his stock.

The likes of PSG, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Manchester United have all been sniffing around Payet but West Ham were adamant that their highest-paid player would not leave.

In an interview with SFR Sport (h/t Le10Sport), the 29-year-old attacking midfielder has opened the door for a return to Ligue 1 side Marseille, the club he left in the summer of 2015 for £10.5m to join West Ham.

“I am not closing the door to anything.

“Marseille have a new project which seems interesting. Aside from that, we are obviously waiting to see the first few things that the new owners do, but Marseille knows how attached I am to the club.

“When I talk about it, I say the best possible things, because that is what I think, so why not.”

Since joining West Ham, Payet has scored 18 goals and recorded 24 assists in 62 appearances for the East London club. Under contract until 2021, it would take a large offer to even bring David Sullivan to the table and whether Marseille have the financial backing to pull off such a coup remains to be seen.
