Reece Oxford set to sign new West Ham contract

West Ham are poised to receive some welcome good news as Reece Oxford is set to sign a new long-term contract with the club, according to the Daily Mail.

This comes after months of negotiations and standstills but it appears that the teenage defender is ready to sign a five-year contract to remain with the Hammers for the foreseeable future.

Oxford’s current deal was set to expire at the end of next season meaning the Hammers had to act fast if they wanted to retain their brightest young star.

The 17-year-old burst onto the scene at the start of last season impressing on his Premier League debut in an unfamiliar defensive midfield role away at Arsenal and helped the Hammers secure a 2-0 victory.

He went on to make 12 appearances in total last term but has been used more sparingly in 2016/17, mainly because Slaven Bilic’s side are going through a poor spell and he is valuing experience in his side to help get the Hammers out of this mess.

However, it’s a fair assumption that with signing a new contract, Oxford was given certain assurances about his game time but any return to the side has been put on hold as he is current;y recovering from a high ankle sprain suffered in training.
