Injury Update: Cresswell closing in on a return

West Ham’s Head of Medical and Sports Science Stijn Vandenbroucke has issued an update on the club’s first-team injury situation and it’s great news for the Hammers.

The most positive news is about Aaron Cresswell. The left-back has been sidelined since July with a knee ligament injury but has been making good progress lately after positing a video on Twitter oh him training individually with fitness coach Eamon Swift.

There’s plans for Cresswell to step up his rehab in the next week or so by partaking in controlled sessions with the U23s side and if everything goes to plan he will return to first-team training during the international break in early October.

As for West Ham’s other long-term absentees, it’s mixed news.

Andre Ayew and Diafra Sakho are both progressing well and have began running as the next stage of their recovery and will be beginning ball drills soon, but Vandenbroucke notes that it’s difficult to actually pinpoint return dates for the African pair.

The same can be said for Andy Carroll. There were rumours that Carroll could be ready for action this week but those have been laid to rest.

Carroll is expected to partake in individual drills with Eamon Swift soon, much like those featured in Cresswell’s video (above) ahead of joining the first-team training sessions.

People believed that the England international striker had suffered a setback in his recovery but Carroll took to Twitter to refute those claims and that his rehab was always going to be a 6-8 week process.

It’s likely we won’t see Carroll back in first-team action until after the October international break, while Ayew and Sakho will be out for longer.
