West Ham put Slaven Bilic new contract talks on hold

Although relatively meaningless, Slaven Bilic has paid the price for West Ham’s poor start to the season with the club putting talks over a new contract for the Croatian on hold, say the Telegraph.

The reason it’s relatively meaningless is because the club have stated that his job is not under threat, but are reluctant to commit their long-term future to Bilic with the club in such a dire position.

David Sullivan said in March that Bilic will be rewarded with a new deal in January following his efforts last term, as long as he proves he is not a one-season-wonder.

“I will give Slaven a new deal in January. I just want to see that he is not a one-season wonder. I’m sure he is not, but we will talk next January – or at the end of next season.” Sullivan said.

His current deal runs until 2018 and contains a clause which allows West Ham to sack him with no compensation fee if the club are relegated. Considering the club’s position, they do not wish to relinquish their right to do so just in case the worst happens.

David Gold and Sullivan have acknowledged that it is early in the season and they aren’t in panic mode, as well as the fact that his squad has been decimated by injuries with several first-team stars still on the sidelines, but would like to see a turnaround in their on-the-field fortunes before handing him a new and improved contract.

West Ham have lost four of their opening five Premier League games and were handed another shock and unwelcome Europa League exit at the hands of Astra Giurgiu in August.
