The news was broken by Ed Malyon of the Mirror who has confirmed the fears of many West Ham fans around.

Lanzini was selected to Argentina’s squad for the Rio Olympics hoping to make a real impression and push towards a possible call-up to the full international side in the coming months.

The 23-year-old was a star performer for West Ham last season on loan from UAE side Al Jazira, scoring seven goals and recording four assists in 31 appearances which prompted the Hammers to make his move permanent on a four-year deal for a fee of around £9m.

Argentina’s Olympics squad Head Coach Julio Olarticoechea has high hopes for Lanzini this summer insisting he was going to be a key player in his side in the attack along with Jonathan Calleri and Angel Correa.

In one of their pre-games warm-up matches against Colombia, Lanzini suffered a knee sprain and flew back to London to be examined by West Ham’s medical team.

The initial fear was that Lanzini would miss the rest of Argentina’s warm-up games and return for the Olympics, but it has now been determined that Lanzini will miss the Olympics and will likely remain at West Ham while he recovers.

West Ham have already lost left-back Aaron Cresswell to a severe knee injury during pre-season and the Englishman will miss three to four months of action, so it’s best to wrap Lanzini up in cotton wool and hope the damage isn’t too bad.
