West Ham are set to battle with Liverpool for the signing of Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to a report in the Mirror (via Sport).
The Belgian made the switch from Arsenal to the Camp Nou back in 2014 but a combination of serious injuries and the form of Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, and Jeremy Mathieu have meant that he’s only played a handful of games for the La Liga champions.
According to the report, Vermaelen, whose wife is English, is open to a return to England and would prefer a move to West Ham over Liverpool, most likely because of the draw of once again living in the London area.
Despite already losing Marc Bartra to Borussia Dortmund, Barca are apparently willing to let the 30-year-old leave the club too, which presumably means that they will be in the market for another central defender, especially if former Hammer Mascherano makes a move to Italy.
