West Ham tried to sign Everton star

West Ham United’s vice-chairman Karren Brady has revealed in an interview with BT Sport that the Hammers tried to sign Everton’s Romelu Lukaku in 2014 when the Belgian left Chelsea.

The 22-year-old joined Everton for around £25million on the back of two successful season-long loan deals at West Brom and the Toffees respectively.

He’s been in fantastic form for Roberto Martinez’s men this season, having scored 14 goals in 19 games in all competitions, including six in his last five Premier League appearances.

However, as Brady explained, the Belgian international could have been at Upton Park, not Goodison Park, had things worked out slightly differently.

We tried to buy [Lukaku]. We certainly pushed the price up when he eventually went to Everton, but we really, really liked him.

In that summer, West Ham signed three strikers; Diafra Sakho, Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate, so although they did miss out on one of the hottest young players in Europe, they can take solace in the fact that they spent the money wisely and brought in three players who have contributed to the team.
