Ex-West Ham Striker – These are fantastic times to be a Hammer

Former West Ham striker Tony Cottee says that is “fantastic” to be a Hammers fan at the moment thanks to the start to the season that Slaven Bilic’s men have had.

Speaking in his London24 column, Cottee said that it is great to be a supporter of the club and praised both the players and the manager after they defeated Chelsea at the weekend.

These are fantastic times to be a Hammer. What a result and what a performance by the boys on Saturday against the champions and credit to Slaven for really going for it. He could easily have played it safe and even a bit negatively against Chelsea and brought in an extra defensive midfielder to replace Victor Moses, but he went for Zarate and it paid off as he scored a superb goal.

Cottee, who played over 250 games for The Hammers during two spells at the club, said that the start to the season has been great, but the fact that West Ham started well last year before fading away is a reminder that there is still plenty of work to do.

We are now third in the league and riding a wave at the moment. Let’s not get carried away, because it could go wrong at any time, as it did last season, but this team seems to have so many options and plenty of strength in depth, so who knows what might happen?

In terms of where West Ham could finish in the table, the former England international said that with plenty of teams struggling in the Premier League, The Hammers could really push on to have a memorable season, similar to what happened to one of the teams he played in, when the club finished in 3rd place.

The Premier League is very competitive, but also very open this season. The two Manchester clubs and Arsenal have shown glimpses of what they can do, but none of them have done that well, while the likes of Liverpool, Spurs and of course Chelsea have not impressed.

West Ham have done as well as any of them and now we have to kick on, keep picking up the points and keep playing with confidence. It was about this time back in the 1985/86 season when we went on one almighty run of unbeaten games and it would be great to see something like that – wins give you confidence and the more confident you are the better the results.
