West Ham star Cheikhou Kouyate advised his international team-mate, Genk defender Kara Mbodj, on his summer transfer.
However, he did not tell his good friend to come and join him at West Ham, despite being heavily linked with a move to the Premier League club.
The 25-year-old has signed for Anderlecht on Kouyate’s advice – the club Cheik played for before his £7m move to West Ham last summer.
Mbodj was said to be on the verge of joining West Ham in a £4m deal back in January, which fell through on deadline day, but the Hammers have reportedly maintained their interest through the summer.
Kouyate persuaded Mbodj to sign with his former club and fil the void of the recently departed Chancel Mbemba, who has made the move to English football with Newcastle United.
“I did not need much time to decide. My friend Cheikhou Kouyate has told be all good things about this club. I realize that it will not be easy to succeed a player like Chancel Mbemba, but I am convinced in my own abilities.” Mbodj told Anderlecht’s official site.
West Ham aren’t short of centre-back cover with new signing Angelo Ogbonna, who starred on debut during the 2-0 win against Arsenal.
