West Ham United have been given an early warning ahead of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie after Fulham produced an impressive defensive performance at Anfield.
Fulham held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw on Saturday, earning their first Premier League point of the season just three days before travelling to London Stadium. The Guardian’s match report described it as a deserved point after Fulham frustrated Liverpool throughout the afternoon.
It means Nuno Espirito Santo’s side should expect a considerably tougher test than Fulham’s early league results might suggest.
Fulham frustrate Liverpool at Anfield
Fulham arrived at Anfield having lost their opening three Premier League games.
They responded with their strongest defensive display of the campaign.
Liverpool struggled to create clear opportunities despite possessing significant attacking quality, while Fulham remained organised and also threatened at the opposite end.
Calvin Bassey impressed in dealing with Alexander Isak, while summer signing David Affengruber also produced an encouraging performance at the back.
Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa praised his players’ character and belief after finally getting his first Premier League point on the board.
That defensive resilience is particularly relevant for West Ham.
The Hammers scored six against Wrexham on Friday, but Tuesday’s opponents have just demonstrated that they can shut down one of the strongest attacks in the Premier League.
West Ham face different challenge against Fulham
West Ham enter the cup tie in excellent form themselves.
Friday’s 6-0 victory over Wrexham made it four consecutive Championship wins and sent Nuno’s side to the top of the table.
The challenge now is carrying that momentum into a different competition.
Fulham’s ability to remain compact at Anfield could force West Ham to be more patient in possession than they were against Wrexham.

Nuno decision looms before Millwall
Nuno must also decide how heavily to rotate.
West Ham travel to Millwall in the Championship only four days after facing Fulham, making this one of the first genuinely difficult squad-management periods of the season.

Fulham’s league position may not look intimidating yet.
Their performance at Anfield certainly should.
