Southampton 1-4 West Ham: Ajala brace sends Hammers through

Southampton 1-4 West Ham secured the Hammers’ place in the Carabao Cup third round as Joshua Ajala scored twice before substitutes Valentín Castellanos and Jarrod Bowen completed a convincing victory at St Mary’s.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s youthful side fell behind to Léo Scienza after only ten minutes but responded impressively. Ajala levelled before half-time and struck again eight minutes after the restart.

Castellanos and Bowen then converted West Ham’s superiority into an emphatic scoreline as the visitors produced the response Nuno demanded following Saturday’s Championship defeat by Charlton.

Southampton 1-4 West Ham: Ajala turns tie around

Nuno made eight changes and handed Finlay Herrick his first senior start in goal. Ajala, Divine Mukasa, Airidas Golambeckis and Ezra Mayers were also included in a young starting XI.

West Ham began uncertainly and Southampton capitalised after ten minutes. Scienza found space inside the penalty area and placed a right-footed finish beyond Herrick.

The Hammers gradually settled. Joël Piroe forced Daniel Peretz into two saves in quick succession, while Max Kilman headed narrowly wide from Mukasa’s corner.

Lewis Orford became increasingly influential and created the equaliser in the 41st minute. His corner reached Ajala at close range, allowing the 19-year-old to head West Ham level before the interval.

Ajala brace gives Nuno the response he needed

West Ham carried their momentum into the second half and moved ahead in the 53rd minute.

Ajala reacted inside the Southampton penalty area and finished from the centre of the box to complete his brace. His two goals rewarded Nuno’s decision to place faith in another Academy of Football graduate.

Nuno introduced Bowen, Castellanos, Manor Solomon and Arne Engels together shortly before the hour, giving West Ham greater experience for the closing stages.

Southampton attempted to respond through former Hammer Divin Mubama and substitutes Finn Azaz and Samuel Edozie. Herrick recovered from a brief injury concern to deny both Azaz and Edozie.

West Ham continued to create the clearer opportunities. Bowen was denied by Peretz before Castellanos made it 3-1 in the 75th minute, turning home Joël Veltman’s delivery from close range.

Bowen completed the scoring nine minutes later. Orford collected his second assist of the evening by releasing the captain, who guided a left-footed finish into the bottom corner.

The goal continued Bowen’s decisive start to the season and underlined the difference West Ham’s senior attackers could make against a tiring Southampton defence.

West Ham youngsters seize their opportunity

Ajala will take most of the attention after scoring twice, but Orford’s two assists were equally encouraging.

Mukasa also offered energy and invention during his first West Ham start, while Golambeckis and Mayers completed the full match alongside Kilman and Veltman.

Sky Sports’ match commentary recorded West Ham creating chances throughout the evening despite Southampton enjoying periods of possession.

After conceding late at Burnley and losing at home to Charlton, Nuno needed a result capable of lifting the mood around his squad. A four-goal away victory, achieved with several young players involved, provides exactly that before Saturday’s Championship trip to Watford.

Southampton: Peretz; Bree, Wood, Stephens, Welington; Bragg, Akachukwu; Fellows, Dobbin, Scienza; Mubama.

West Ham: Herrick; Veltman, Golambeckis, Kilman, Mayers; Orford, Kanté; Lamadrid, Mukasa, Ajala; Piroe.

Goals: Scienza 10; Ajala 41, 53; Castellanos 75; Bowen 84.
