West Ham lose Ethan Pinnock as Coventry agree £6m deal

West Ham have missed out on Ethan Pinnock after Coventry City agreed a deal worth up to £6million for the Brentford defender.

The 33-year-old had emerged as a potential signing for Nuno Espírito Santo, who wants to strengthen his defence before the transfer window closes.

However, BBC Sport reports that Coventry are closing in on Pinnock, while talkSPORT reports the agreement includes an initial £5m payment and another £1m in potential add-ons.

The Jamaica international has reportedly been given permission to undergo a medical before signing a three-year contract, with the option of a further season.

West Ham lose Ethan Pinnock as defensive search continues

Pinnock’s impending move represents an immediate setback for West Ham after he was identified as one of several centre-back options.

ReadWestHam reported earlier on Monday that West Ham had been offered Victor Nelsson, with Pinnock also under consideration as Nuno assessed whether to sign up to two defenders.

The Brentford player would have brought substantial experience after making 216 appearances for the Bees and helping them win promotion from the Championship.

However, he featured only eight times last season and has entered the final year of his contract. Coventry’s return to the Premier League now appears to have given Frank Lampard’s side the advantage.

West Ham’s need for reinforcements could become more pressing if Jean-Clair Todibo leaves.

The Hammers have entered talks over Todibo’s future after interest from an unnamed Premier League club, while Marseille have also been linked with the French defender.

West Ham are targeting four further signings across several positions, including another centre-back.

With Pinnock heading elsewhere, Nuno and recruitment chief Nils Koppen must now move quickly towards alternative targets.
