West Ham United have reportedly received an €8million offer from Olympiacos for Edson Álvarez, giving the Greek champions a potential advantage over Real Sociedad in the race to sign the Mexico captain.
Transfer journalist César Luis Merlo reports that Olympiacos have submitted an €8m proposal for the midfielder, whose future remains unresolved following West Ham’s relegation.
The offer represents a significant development after Olympiacos initially explored a loan deal.
Olympiacos submit €8m Edson Alvarez offer
AS México reports that Olympiacos want to sign Álvarez permanently, while Real Sociedad have been pursuing a loan agreement with West Ham.
That difference could influence the Hammers’ decision.
A permanent transfer would bring an immediate fee and remove Álvarez from West Ham’s wage bill. A loan would provide less upfront money, although any option or obligation to buy could change the overall picture.
Álvarez spent last season on loan at Fenerbahçe before returning to the London Stadium this summer. He started West Ham’s Carabao Cup victory over Portsmouth but did not feature in their Championship matches against Burnley or Charlton Athletic.
Real Sociedad remain in Edson Alvarez transfer race
Olympiacos’ improved approach does not necessarily mean an agreement is close.
ReadWestHam previously reported that Real Sociedad had moved closer to signing Álvarez, with the Spanish club holding discussions over a possible loan.
However, the emergence of a permanent offer gives West Ham a different option to consider.
The Hammers signed Álvarez from Ajax in 2023, with Sky Sports reporting the transfer could reach £35.4m.
Any €8m sale would therefore represent a considerably lower headline fee than West Ham originally paid for the midfielder.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s squad continues to attract interest following relegation, with Crystal Palace also preparing a potential £50m approach for captain Jarrod Bowen.
West Ham have not confirmed whether they will accept Olympiacos’ offer, while neither club has announced an agreement for Álvarez.
