West Ham United face fresh competition for Jamie Vardy after São Paulo opened talks over a surprise move for the free-agent striker.
The Hammers have already made an enquiry about Vardy as Nuno Espírito Santo searches for another centre-forward following the start of West Ham’s Championship campaign.
However, Brazilian giants São Paulo have now entered the picture. UOL reports that initial negotiations have begun with the 39-year-old’s representatives over a potential free transfer.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook has also confirmed the interest and says Vardy would prefer a return to English football, although a move to Brazil has not been ruled out. West Ham and Sheffield Wednesday are among the English clubs to have explored a deal.
West Ham face fresh Jamie Vardy competition
Vardy remains available after leaving Cremonese following their relegation from Serie A.
He scored seven goals in 29 appearances last season and would provide proven experience without West Ham having to pay a transfer fee.
Nuno’s need for another attacker became even clearer following Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Burnley, when he publicly called for further reinforcements in the offensive areas of his squad.
Vardy is not West Ham’s only option.
Troy Parrott remains a target, while Leeds United forward Joel Piroe has emerged as an alternative as the Hammers assess the best route to strengthen their promotion push. TalkSPORT reported on Sunday that nothing was imminent with Piroe but Leeds are open to either a permanent departure or a loan containing a future obligation.
West Ham have already spent significantly rebuilding the squad this summer, with ReadWestHam previously examining the scale of the promotion rebuild.
Vardy would offer a very different solution.
São Paulo’s emergence does not mean West Ham have lost their opportunity, particularly if the former Leicester City striker prioritises remaining in England.
But with talks now taking place elsewhere, the Hammers may soon need to decide whether their enquiry becomes something more concrete.
