West Ham United have reportedly reached an agreement for Niclas Füllkrug to return to Werder Bremen, bringing the striker’s difficult spell in east London close to an end.
The Germany international has been expected to leave throughout the summer after returning from his loan spell with AC Milan, but his future has now taken a major step towards being resolved.
According to BILD, West Ham and Werder held short-notice negotiations on Monday afternoon which ended successfully. Füllkrug is expected to undergo a medical in Bremen on Tuesday before completing his return to the Bundesliga club.
Niclas Füllkrug closes in on West Ham exit
A move would end an unsuccessful two-year association with West Ham.
Füllkrug joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2024 but injuries prevented him from establishing himself consistently, with the striker scoring three times in 29 appearances before joining Milan on loan in January. West Ham confirmed those figures when his temporary move to Italy was announced.
Milan declined to make the transfer permanent, leaving Füllkrug back at West Ham this summer and still under contract until 2028.
His position under Nuno Espírito Santo had nevertheless become increasingly clear.
ReadWestHam identified Füllkrug as one of three transfer situations Nuno needed to resolve before the Championship season began, with the Hammers prepared to move on from one of their highest earners.
That process now appears close to completion.
Füllkrug returning to Werder would also carry significant personal meaning. He previously enjoyed two spells with the German club and developed into a Bundesliga Golden Boot winner before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2023.
For West Ham, however, the timing is particularly significant.
Joel Piroe is now set for a West Ham medical as Nuno simultaneously reshapes his centre-forward options. Füllkrug heading in the opposite direction would remove one unresolved situation from the squad while the Hammers close in on the attacking reinforcement their manager has demanded.
