West Ham officially announce exit for 22-year-old after 16 years

West Ham have officially confirmed Freddie Potts has joined Club Brugge on a permanent transfer, ending his 16-year association with the Hammers.

The transfer sees the academy graduate move to Belgium for an undisclosed fee.

Potts joined West Ham at the age of six and progressed through the Academy of Football before making his senior debut against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League in December 2021.

The 22-year-old was also part of the squad which lifted the UEFA Europa Conference League in Prague in 2023.

Freddie Potts transfer officially confirmed

West Ham officially announced on Tuesday that Potts has completed his permanent move to Club Brugge.

The midfielder leaves after making 25 appearances for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side last season, having previously gained valuable EFL experience during loan spells with Wycombe Wanderers and Portsmouth.

The timing is notable given Potts’ comments earlier in pre-season.

ReadWestHam reported on 21 July that Potts wanted to establish himself as a West Ham first-team regular. He highlighted his Championship experience and said he wanted to play as much as possible for his boyhood club.

Instead, his future will now be in Belgium.

Club Brugge are the reigning Belgian champions and can offer Potts the chance to continue his development while competing near the top of their domestic league.

For West Ham, the departure removes another midfield option during a summer of significant squad change.

Potts had spent virtually his entire footballing life in Claret and Blue, making his permanent departure one of the more significant academy exits of the window.
