West Ham United could reportedly lose Jarrod Bowen for a reduced fee next summer if they fail to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
The club captain has committed himself to the 2026/27 Championship campaign after holding talks with majority shareholder Daniel Kretinsky and director Jiri Svarc in Prague.
However, Claret and Hugh reports that Bowen’s revised terms include a low release clause which would become active if West Ham are not promoted.
The exact figure has not been disclosed, while neither West Ham nor Bowen’s representatives have confirmed the reported clause publicly.
Promotion failure could cost West Ham their captain
Bowen’s current contract runs until 2030. The revised agreement reportedly includes an option extending his stay to 2031 if the Hammers return to the Premier League at the first attempt.
The England international is also believed to have secured a significant promotion bonus. Those terms would reward Bowen for staying while protecting his opportunity to return to the top flight if West Ham fall short.
As Read West Ham reported following his public commitment, keeping the captain provides Nuno Espírito Santo with the attacking and dressing-room leader needed for a promotion challenge.
The arrangement still places enormous pressure on the club. West Ham could retain Bowen for another five years by winning promotion, but failure may leave them powerless to demand their preferred fee next summer.
Bowen’s loyalty has given the Hammers one season to repair the damage caused by relegation. The message for the board and players is now brutally simple: win promotion or risk losing the captain permanently.
