West Ham United have identified Leicester City centre-back Ben Nelson as a possible alternative to Axel Disasi as Nuno Espírito Santo searches for defensive reinforcements.
The Hammers remain interested in bringing Disasi back to the London Stadium following his loan spell last season. However, competition for the Chelsea defender could force West Ham to consider younger and cheaper options.
According to The West Ham Way, ExWHUEmployee has described West Ham’s interest in Nelson as “solid”. Leicester are reportedly seeking between £10m and £12m after rejecting an approach from Torino.
Manchester United and Sunderland have also been credited with interest, leaving West Ham facing competition if they decide to advance their pursuit.
Nelson fits West Ham’s defensive transfer plan
Nelson came through Leicester’s academy and has gained senior experience with the Foxes, Rochdale, Doncaster Rovers and Oxford United.
The 22-year-old can operate on either side of central defence and has earned praise for his confidence in possession. Former Leicester head coach Enzo Maresca previously described him as an “ideal defender”, while Gary Rowett called him “outstanding” during their time together at Oxford.
Nelson’s official Leicester profile lists him at 6ft 3in and highlights his role in their 2023/24 Championship title-winning campaign. He later impressed during an injury-affected loan spell at Oxford before returning to the King Power Stadium.
West Ham’s search appears focused on defenders who can start attacks as well as protect their penalty area. The club have also identified Paris FC centre-back Otávio as an ambitious target.
Nelson would arrive with less top-flight experience than Disasi, but his age and lower fee would offer considerable development and resale potential.
No formal West Ham offer has been reported. Their interest could strengthen if a permanent agreement for Disasi proves difficult to complete.
