Out-of-favor midfielder linked with West Ham exit, Bundesliga club re-ignites interest

  • West Ham United’s Soungoutou Magassa linked with a move to Eintracht Frankfurt
  • The midfielder has only made 26 appearances for the Hammers, including 14 starts
  • Frankfurt attempted to sign Magassa before West Ham in August 2025

West Ham United’s Soungoutou Magassa could be out the door after less than a year in claret and blue, with Eintracht Frankfurt showing interest following the Hammers’ Premier League relegation.

Magassa was part of the West Ham team that dropped into the Championship on the final day, ending their 14-year status in the top flight and casting the future of a number of players in doubt.

It has been expected that, with the likes of Matues Fernandes and Tomáš Souček potentially leaving, slots in the midfield would open up a chance for Magassa to flourish after enduring a stuttering start to his career in East London.

However, a recent report suggests that relegation may pave the way for the Frenchman to depart.

Soungoutou Magassa on Eintracht Frankfurt radar after a year into West Ham career

According to BILD, Magassa is subject to interest from Bundesliga club Frankfurt, who are also in the process of transitioning after finishing 8th in the German top flight and missing out on European qualification.

The national publication states that Magassa’s profile, as a box-to-box midfielder who has played a part in his limited gametime given it’s also the same role Souček occupies, is of great interest to the River side.

The 22-year-old has only been at West Ham for nine months after arriving from Monaco, but with an undesirable impact at the club under then-head coach Graham Potter and now Nuno Espirito Santo, Magassa has found his development halted.

Magassa has featured for various French youth international teams and will likely harbour hopes of crafting out a credible international career with the senior side, which won’t happen in the Championship.

Why are Frankfurt back in for Magassa

Before West Ham secured Magassa’s signature, Frankfurt attempted to hijack a deal in the final hours. The Hammers reached an agreement with Monaco for a deal in the region of €20 million; however, that could’ve been scuppered by the Germans if Magassa hadn’t signed off on a deal at Rush Green.

As BILD reports, the arrival of coach Adi Hütter, who managed Magassa at Monaco, is behind the renewed interest. Frankfurt parted ways with Albert Riera after an abrasive six-month spell in charge.

Before spending two years at Monaco, Austrian Hütter managed in Germany, including with Frankfurt, and is evidently looking to welcome his return with a move for a player whom he shares a productive relationship.

“He is a coach who has a lot of confidence in me, and I really feel that,” said Magassa in 2023 about Hütter. “On the pitch, he speaks with me a lot and it’s the same in training as well. Lots of that is on the mental aspects and he gives me a lot of advice on this, on how to keep focused until the end, and how to play with confidence.”
