Relegation permutations: What West Ham need from Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur tonight
  • West Ham lost 3-1 to Newcastle United on Sunday
  • The Hammers sit two points from safety with one game left to play
  • Tottenham Hotspur can relegate the Irons with a win over Chelsea tonight

West Ham United’s 3-1 loss to Newcastle United on Sunday evening has left them on the brink of Premier League relegation. The Hammers sit two points from safety, with just one games left and Tottenham Hotspur, who sit above them, have two games left.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team have had their opportunities. Should they have beaten Newcastle, or even Brentford two weeks ago, they could still control their own destiny. Instead, they are here, waiting on others in the hope they can have one final go.

For West Ham, it is out of their hands, and it is all eyes on Spurs tonight to see if the Irons get one more shot at keeping their top flight status on the final day.

Tonight’s permutations

Tottenham Hotspur head to Chelsea tonight knowing that anything other than a loss would see them all but secure their Premier League status for next season.

A win for Spurs would officially relegate West Ham and see the Hammers go into the final day as a Championship team.

A draw for Spurs, would all but relegate the Irons given the fact they would then be three points behind their London rivals. At present, Spurs goal difference sit a -9, whilst West Ham’s is -22, so there would need to be 13 goal swing between now and full-time on Sunday, with Spurs losing twice.

Anything other than a win for Chelsea all but condemns the Hammers to the drop.

Final day implecations

As stated, should Spurs pick up any points then West Ham head into the final day playing for little more than pride.

That being said, should Spurs lose, the Hammers will have one more shot. The Irons would need to beat Leeds United at the London Stadium and hope that Spurs lose to Everton in order to secure another season of Premier League football.

Anything else and West Ham will be a Championship team, either tonight or at full-time on Sunday.
