- West Ham lost 1-0 to Arsenal on Sunday
- The loss leaves the Hammers two points from safety
- Mateus Fernandes had a great chance to put the home side ahead
West Ham United’s Premier League survival hopes took another blow on Sunday, as VAR denied them a late equaliser to condemn them to a 1-0 loss to Arsenal. The loss, combined with Tottenham Hotspur’s draw with Leeds United last night, leaves the Hammers two points from safety with two games to go.
Whilst much of the discourse will lie around the VAR call, West Ham held their own for much of the game. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side defended well and fashioned a number of chances in the game. With or without the referee call, they will have felt a point was their for the taking.
The Irons will head to Newcastle United this weekend knowing they have to win. If they don’t, their fate could be sealed before Leeds United come to the London Stadium on the final day. Whilst doom and gloom may be the talk of the town, one midfielder believes Sunday’s performance is reason for hope.
Mateus Fernandes say’s West Ham will not give up
Against Arsenal, Mateus Fernandes could, and maybe should have scored. Regardless, the Portugal international says West Ham will not give up in their survival fight, telling the club’s official website, they need to believe.
“We fought for every ball and for every duel and we showed a lot of spirit in the team,” said Fernandes. “It was incredible on the pitch. We felt every moment the effort of the team.
“We needed to score our chances. My chance, I needed to score. I train every day to score my chances. It was a good save from David as well.
“Now we have to look forward, to rest, to sleep well and try to recover to play against Newcastle because we need to win that game.
“I think, first of all, we need to look at the game and take confidence from the fact we played well against the first team in this league, so if we can compete against these teams, we can compete against all the teams in this league.
“It gives confidence to my teammates, to the Club, because we can do it. There are still games to play and points to take and we need to believe until the end because there are two games and things can change very quick.”
