- West Ham beat Everton 2-1 on Saturday at the London Stadium
- The win keeps the Hammers out of the Premier League bottom three
- Callum Wilson scored the winner deep into stoppage time
West Ham United closed in on a huge victory on Saturday as they scored a late winner to beat Everton 2-1 at the London Stadium. The Hammers looked as thought they were heading back into the relegation zone before Callum Wilson received the ball at the back post and did what he does best.
The three points not only keep West Ham out of the bottom three, but also keep the gap between them and Tottenham Hotspur at two points. Going into the final four games of the season, the Hammer destiny remains well and truly in their own hands.
Tomas Soucek had given Nuno Espirito Santo’s team the lead, before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall equalized for Everton, pegging the Irons back. As all looked lost, Nuno rang the changes and it was Wilson, who loves a goal against the Toffees, who came up with the winner.
BBC Sport’s Chris Wise picks West Ham’s season saving moment
BBC Sport’s Chris Wise, who was at the London Stadium when Wilson scored, says it could be the moment West Ham look back on, should they stay in the Premier League this season.
“If West Ham stay up this season, they’ll likely point to Saturday’s match-winning goal from Callum Wilson and say ‘that was our moment.'”
The Hammers have many late goals this season, but none could prove more important than the one the 33-year-old scored against Everton.
“I was in the stadium, and the noise when the ball went in was really quite something. Most clubs in West Ham’s current predicament probably don’t find a way to win that game. Not just because of their league position, but having conceded an equaliser so late on as well. For those with less spirit, there would have been no coming back from that. But clearly, we’re talking about a different West Ham team now.
“The outcome of the relegation battle is so tough to call. But West Ham offered another gutsy display which will only cement the internal belief that it isn’t going to be them heading to the Championship.”
