- Nine West Ham players in action for their nations this week
- Four West Ham players could qualify for the World Cup in this break
- Mateus Fernandes could make his senior debut for Portugal
This week West Ham United’s goal of staying in the Premier League is on hold with the last international window of the season underway. A number of Hammers are with their nations this week and for some, there is a lot at stake.
A total of nine West Ham senior players have been called up to represent their countries. Jarrod Bowen, Mads Hermansen, El Hadji Malick Diouf, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mateus Fernandes, Tomas Soucek, Keiber Lamadrid and Callum Marshall, who is out on-loan with VFL Bochum.
For some, it is just around of friendly’s within this window, but for others they may be about to play two games that decide whether their country will go to this summer’s World Cup or not.
Which West Ham players are playing and where?
West Ham shot stopper Mads Hermansen is set to make his senior debut for Denmark this week, with perennial starter, Kasper Schmeichel, out for the foreseeable future. There is a lot at stake for the Dane’s as they take on North Macedonia tonight in the semi-final of their World Cup qualifiers, in Copenhagen.
Should Denmark win that match, Hermansen could face his teammate, Tomas Soucek in the playoff final for a place in the USA. Czechia host the Republic of Ireland in Prague tonight, for a place in that game.
Callum Marshall is in the Northern Ireland squad for their playoff semi-final. The current Bochum loanee’s nation play Italy in this evening for a chance to play either Wales or Bosnia in the playoff final.
Also looking to make it to this summer’s tournament is Aaron Wan-Bissaka. His DR Congo side will take on either Jamaica or New Caledonia on Tuesday night for a place at the World Cup.
Jarrod Bowen is in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad and could even start with a number of Three Lions being unavailable for their game with Uruguay on Friday night. England play again on Tuesday night, hosting Japan in another preparation game ahead of the summer.
El Hadji Malick Diouf returns to Senegal action, with the nation taking on Peru in Paris on Saturday afternoon. They will return home to face Gambia on Tuesday evening before Diouf will make the long journey back to London.
Mateus Fernandes has made the senior Portugal squad for the first time in his career. Roberto Martinez’s team have qualified for the World Cup and face Mexico on Saturday night before facing the USA in a mini-tour of North America.
Konstantinos Mavropanos could feature in two friendly’s for Greece, with the nation having unfortunately missed out on World Cup qualification. They will host Paraguay on Friday before heading to up to face Hungary at the Puskas Arena on Monday.
Young Keiber Lamadrid has made the Venuzuala squad in this international break. The South American side will Trinidad and Tobago on Friday and then Uzbekistan on Monday, both games taking place in Uzbekistan.
