West Ham United are beginning to have something to cheer about this season. Victory via penalties on Monday night, see’s the Hammers through to the quarter final’s of the FA Cup at Brentford’s expense, not only that, they are level with Nottingham Forest in 17th on their quest for Premier League survival this season.
Going into 2026, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team risked falling adrift. Instead, with a number of incomings, the Iron’s ship has turned around and they now have a really good chance of not only staying up this year, but also making a semi-final at Wembley.
One of the signing’s that has helped turn things around has been Axel Disasi. The 28-year-old had been left out in the cold by Chelsea, spending the second-half of last season on-loan with Aston Villa. This year it was West Ham‘s turn to borrow the defender, and he has been a sensation.
Speaking to The Athletic, Disasi was coy on his future but loving his time at the London Stadium:
“If I say everything, maybe I will get in trouble! It was very tough watching games every weekend on the TV. So I just waited for my time and that’s why now I’m just enjoying it, because I know what it feels to be in front of the TV and not on the pitch.
“So I try to enjoy every moment, because I know that it’s not guaranteed. I learned to be more patient and to stay professional, even if the circumstances are hard. I had the help of my family, and they helped me stay in good shape.
“So far my experience (here at West Ham) is very nice. At the moment, when I’m on the pitch the feeling is great. Obviously, before, it was not the case for me. But I’m just enjoying playing again.”
Does Disasi have a West Ham future?
It’s quite often said “never fall in love with a loan player” but if Disasi help’s West Ham stay up, it will be hard for most not too. The Frenchman’s future is unlikely to be at Chelsea so regardless of whether the Hammers are in the picture, the 28-year-old will be on the move.
Of course, Disasi was quizzed on this, but reverted to the task in hand first:
“We still have nine games to go so I don’t want to think about this for the moment. I just want to enjoy my time. I needed to play and especially in my position because it’s something that I missed last season (at Aston Villa), when I was playing out of position. The manager has allowed me to express myself.”
