The situation: How the weekend’s results change West Ham’s survival chances

West Ham United were not good enough to leave Anfield with three points as they lost 5-2 to Liverpool. At the time, the result left the door open for those around them to pull away and make the gap to safety much bigger, but all the side’s failed to do so.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side didn’t play all that bad on Merseyside, but it was failing to take their chances that cost them. Liverpool, on the other hand, were clinical in front of net, taking advantage of West Ham’s lacklustre defending from set pieces.

With results going their way, West Ham’s situation has not changed, as they remain two points behind Nottingham Forest and safety. Vitor Pereira’s team failed to capitalise on Morgan Gibbs-White’s superb volley, as they lost 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion. That result see’s Forest continue their losing run, leaving the door open for the Irons.

Tottenham Hotspur continued their dismal run, losing 2-1 to West Ham’s next Premier League opponents, Fulham. Igor Tudor’s side are yet to win in 2026, and have conceded six goals since the Croatian took over. Spurs are only four points above the Hammers, and could easily be the team to fall into the bottom three if Nuno’s team can find points.

In 15th, Leeds United failed to take their chances against title chasing Manchester City. Daniel Farke’s side had numerous chances to find the back of the net against their Lancashire rivals but failed to do so. The 1-0 loss keeps Leeds on 31 points, but with a favourable fixture list, they should remain safe.

In 14th, Crystal Palace did have a 1-0 lead against Manchester United. A Maxence Lacroix red card saw them capitulate at Old Trafford, losing 2-1 to the Red Devils. They remain on 35 points, but are likely out of trouble now.

The bottom two

It was nearly a disastrous weekend for West Ham in terms of the team’s below them this weekend. Burnley came from 3-0 down against Brentford to draw level, and even take the lead if VAR hadn’t of intervened. Luckily for the Hammers, the Bees found a last minute winner to keep the Claret’s six points below them and prevent them from adding to the pressure.

Wolverhampton Wanderers did get their second league win of the season, beating local rivals Aston Villa 2-0 at Molineux. The win takes Wolves over the dreaded 11 point mark, but still leaves them 14 points from safety.

Future oppenents

The games are coming quick and fast for Nuno’s West Ham. On Wednesday the Hammers head across London to face Fulham. The Cottagers beat Spurs on Sunday to keep them in the relegation scrap, whilst the team themselves are picking up form.

The Irons will need a strong performance to keep Marco Silva’s team at bay, and most importantly, take their chances.

Following the game at Craven Cottage, West Ham have an FA Cup tie with fellow Premier League side Brentford before hosting Manchester City at the London Stadium.
