Pundit predicts Leicester City victory over West Ham

Former top-flight defender turned BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson backed Leicester City to beat West Ham 2-1 on Sunday when writing his regular prediction column for BBC Sport.

In what looks set to be an important encounter in the race for a top-four finish, Lawrenson has suggested the Hammers could see themselves edged out when they welcome the Foxes to the London Stadium this weekend.

Both managers can be delighted with how their sides have performed this season, with David Moyes’ men, in particular, transforming their fortunes having narrowly avoided relegation last term.

However, having lost Declan Rice to a knee injury suffered during the international break and Michail Antonio to a hamstring issue on Monday, the Irons suddenly look light – perhaps leading to Lawrenson’s prediction:

Even without the injured Declan Rice, West Ham were impressive against Wolves on Monday evening, but this is a much bigger test for them. Leicester were outplayed by Manchester City last time out, but I don’t think you can really read too much into that – Brendan Rodgers’ team are still a very good side.

The 63-year-old went on to cite Leicester’s failure to finish inside the Champions League qualification positions last season, despite being in a commanding position – however, the former Liverpool ace expects Rodger’s side not to make the same mistake again.

There’s no doubt that the injury blows suffered in the last week have put a huge dent in the Hammers chances of a top-four finish.

This game is amongst the most difficult contests left on paper, and if Moyes can mastermind a result there remains every chance Europe could remain on the cards.

matchday.
