Former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell has urged West Ham to sign Daniel Sturridge, who he feels could prove to be a ‘key player’ between now and the end of the season.
The former Arsenal and Everton frontman told Football Insider that the Hammers should look to Sturridge, who is available on a free transfer, as a short term measure to ease their centre-forward woes. He said:
I love Daniel Sturridge, I love how he plays. He could be a wonderful addition for any team in the Premier League but it is his fitness and injury record which is a concern.
If he could sort that out, he could be a key player for West Ham between now and the end of the season, definitely.
Having left Turkish side Trabzonspor last year and yet to find a club since, Sturridge has also been linked with a move to Newcastle United after Callum Wilson was ruled out for several weeks with injury.
However, the Irons are low on recognised frontmen after Sebastien Haller left the club, leaving an injury-prone Michail Antonio to carry the torch.

Still just 31 years old, Sturridge has 77 goals in 218 career Premier League appearances including six in four outings against West Ham, and could still have plenty to offer to the Hammers if they were to snap him up.
Fitness will always be at the heart of deciding whether to sign Sturridge given his injury history, but if the 26-cap England man can stay fit for a few months, then it’s certainly a deal worth doing.
Although both Jarrod Bowen and Jesse Lingard performed admirably on Monday night as false nines, David Moyes would surely benefit from having another out-and-out striker in the squad.
Another benefit in signing Sturridge for the run-in would be his experience, having enjoyed a trophy-laden career prior to his recent spell away from the game. We’re certainly with Campbell on this one.
