Former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has described Blackburn Rovers marksman Adam Armstrong as the ‘perfect signing’ for West Ham.
The man with the most Premier League goals for Aston Villa told Football Insider that the Hammers should look no further than Armstrong in the summer as David Moyes looks to bolster his attacking options.
Drawing comparisons with the impact made by Ollie Watkins since he made the switch from Brentford to the Premier League, Agbonlahor has backed the 23-year-old to thrive in the top flight. He said about Armstrong:
A lot of these Championship strikers are making the grade when they come up to the Premier League and they are showing they can do it.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he was the sort of player who wouldn’t moan about being the second choice until he gets settled in. I’m sure that would be a perfect signing that David Moyes would look at.
Armstrong has been in spectacular form this season, having scored 17 times in 26 Championship appearances, earning an average Sofascore match rating of 7.19 along the way. Only Brentford’s Ivan Toney has outscored him in the division in 2020/21.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
Signing a high-quality striker in the summer seems imperative for Moyes after a quiet January saw the Irons left with only Michail Antonio to carry the centre-forward burden.
With another reported target in Toney seemingly indebted to fire Brentford to the promised land, Armstrong – whose Blackburn side seem less ready to make the step to the Premier League – could be a more realistic option.
The former Newcastle striker already possesses some of the qualities which Moyes holds in high esteem from his strikers, with the ability to hold up the ball important when operating as the focal point. Therefore, Agbonlahor is justified in recommending Armstrong as an ideal target for West Ham.
