West Ham manager David Moyes has delivered a worrying word of warning to Hammers fans who may be expecting new signings in January.
After sanctioning the sale of the much-maligned Sebastien Haller earlier this month, many may have expected a replacement striker to be a formality.
However, in his pre-match press conference ahead of the West Brom clash this evening, Moyes has warned that there is a ‘strong chance’ there will be no new signings unless the club can’t strike the right deal.
He outlined: “What I don’t want to do, I don’t want to spend and waste my money, take a wage up, bringing a player in, spend big money and find that actually, I’ve got it wrong. I’d rather I waited and got someone who might be available in the summer.”
The 57-year-old is clearly determined to learn from lessons of old, and he continued to reiterate that, despite their best efforts, a signing wasn’t a formality, saying: “I’ve tried really hard to get something to add to it (the squad). But I’m having to caveat that by saying there’s a strong chance we don’t get anyone, which is the truth”

Not the words that many of the Irons faithful would have wanted to hear from their manager. If the West Ham squad was light on strikers when the season began, it’s positively desolate now.
Whilst we can see the common sense in wanting to avoid the mistakes of the past in the January transfer window, all of the money recouped on Haller and any other available funds need to go towards a centre-forward this month.
As things stand, West Ham are a Michail Antonio hamstring problem away from being forced to play Andriy Yarmolenko upfront.
